How does language build worlds, shape experiences, and guide us through digital spaces? This course explores how English functions as a creative and communicative tool in today’s interactive media — from the expansive storytelling of video games to the concise, user-friendly language of digital interfaces.

You will investigate two interlinked areas:

  1. Language and World-Building in Games
Discover how English constructs characters, plots, and immersive game worlds. You’ll analyse dialogue, narrative tone, and storytelling strategies across genres, and reflect on how linguistic choices affect player experience.

  2. Language, Clarity, and Voice in Digital Interfaces (UX Writing)
Examine how English operates in apps, websites, and interactive systems. You’ll explore microcopy, tone, and brevity — how the smallest pieces of text (buttons, menus, feedback messages) create trust, clarity, and brand personality.
